The Vote

At 21 years of age, living in Aljunied GRC, I am one of the privileged few who will be able to exercise my vote, barring the possibility of a walkover. But it comes with great dismay - but no surprise - that young voters nowadays exhibit ambivalence to the imminent elections.

Political apathy is the nemesis of political freedom. While political freedom seems like an extraneous ideal in an ivory tower, people should be reminded that it, too, can affect bread-and-butter issues.
Kelvin Lim Bing Xuan, in an email (Your Insights, The Straits Times, March 25)

"So?" I hear people thinking aloud.

Tag, The Remnants

Four Places you've been on vacation:
1. London, especially Leicester Square. Musicals and theatre plays are performed are performed two times daily, and as soon as one of them ends its run, it is quickly replaced by another.
My favourite musical, La Cava debuted here. But it never saw much success and its run ended in 2000.

Harrods, an upmarket departmental store was an eye opener to me. In particular, I witnessed the most perfect pineapple in existent. It looked surreally symmetrical with each "eye" occupying an equal surface area. The colour was in a rich orange and yellow tone with absolutely no blemish in sight. The greatest fruity regret I have harboured up to today is not purchasing the paragon of pineapples.
Harrods was also the place where I paid the most exorbitant toilet entrance fee, an unearthly price of one pound (S$2.70!).

2. Las Vegas. the hourly outdoor performances put up by some of the casinos simply blew me away.

3. Japan. it's a pity I can't recall much details although I remembered vividly the ornate and intricate details in their food packaging. Their penchant for bowing also made me worry for the strain on their vertebrates.

4. Switzerland. One word, time.

Four websites you visit daily:
1. Yahoo! (Auctions, Mail, Groups)
2. NUS IVLE 7.7 (Don't be fooled by the 7.7. It's unreliable as ever.)

3. Google.com
4. Neopets (Don't even ask)

Four of your favourite food:
1. 2. 3. 4. I'm officially stumped. Can't put decide on a particular food.

Four places you would rather be right now:
1. The streets of London
2. Anywhere with aurora borealis, the Northern lights
3. Gunkanjima (battleship island), an abandoned island off the western coast of Japan. Anyone interested?

4. Iceland. Geysers and volcanic activities, must be a bjork-tiful to behold. Heh.

Four words I wanna say right now:
1. I
2. am
3. really
4. sianzzzzzz.

Four tagged:
1. Me
2. Myself
3. And
4. I

Yes, and the tag ends here. Muahahaha.

Jigsaw Jiggle

"LIKENED to a jigsaw puzzle, Singapore's independence was achieved with the PAP Old Guard sealing the final piece. However, let us not forget the other pieces who made this picture possible."
Kelvin Lim, in an SMS (in Your Insights, The Straits Times, March 11)

Apparent Meaning:
The PAP fought successfully for the independence of Singapore. Keeping that in mind, let's be reminded of the people who came before the PAP.

Intended Meaning:
Stop hogging the limelight in history textbooks, authoritarian PAP! Despite the PAP's extreme suspicion of communist political ideologies, one cannot deny that past allies with the communists had helped it to gain political foothold. I'll go as far to assert that the Lim Yew Hock government made the largest contribution to Singapore's independence pavin... *incessant babbles*

Heh. Nation-Building (a Singapore Studies module) is fun! :p

Fore Fours (First)

Wow. It's been almost ages since I've blogged. So here's a no-brainer entry. (Yes, Jevon... I haven't forgotten that I was tagged.)

Four Jobs you've had in your life:
1. Yahoo! (You know what I mean...)
2. Bossini (I hope you don't know what I mean...)
3. Army (Hmmmmm...)
4. Darn. I've ran out.

Four Movies you could watch over and over:
1. City of God

A convincing brazilian film depicting a viscious cycle of violence and despair.

2. Dancer in the Dark

Raw and controversial. Never before was a film so condemned and commended at the same time. Another heartwrenching film about a mother's love for a child, played by a baffling Björk and directed by minimalistic Lars von Trier.

3. Memento

Interspersed scenes which converges into a climatic revelation. Revenge is never sweet unless remembered.

4. Tale of Two Sisters

Captivating soundtrack, morose setting, fractured storyline and a heartbreaking ending. It's still the best psychological horror film I've watched so far.

Four Places you've lived in:
1. Hougang (the opposition side)
2. Pulau Tekong
3. Nee Soon Camp, a place where much bloo (literally) and sweat were shed
4. Leith Park

Four TV shows you love to watch:
1. Desperate Housewives (Need I mention?)
2. Alias (Go Jennifer go! Garner more spunk baby!)
3. Friends, Coupling (Heh. One American, the other the British equivalent)
4. Nine Lives

“9 Lives” is a groundbreaking concept drama exclusively shot for Arts Central. Unfolding compellingly over 8 one-hour episodes, “9 Lives” is the first local drama where the characters and story line of the serial has been created and derived from improvisation. A collaboration between Tan Kheng Hua as television producer and award-winning Malaysian film director Saw Teong Hin (Puteri Gunung Ledang), this is undoubtedly the best local drama. I'm looking forward to it being released in DVD.
